Mask of Hayama

African devil mask carved out of brown/black wood. The lines are smooth and curved, displaying enormous raised eyes, a thick and angular nose, no ears, and a small mouth with little teeth. The texture is strange, feeling lighter and more porous than expected. Visually a combination of at least 4 different styles divided into quadrants that almost don't go together. There are spiral patterns all over along with spots that look like sores or blemishes. The bottom is rough, looking as though it's broken off or something broke it off. The mouth is made with real human teeth. citation needed

Mask has no straps and, after experimentation, we know that it affixes itself to a face for a short time when held up.

Pnakotic Manuscripts

A manuscript, 10" x 12.5" bound in pale green leather. The cover has no title, only a peculiar pentagram-like symbol, seared into the heavy bindings. The title page gives the work's name, followed by a subtitle "As written in the so-called Pnakotik Scrolls, as translatid from the Greke by the author togeder with addicional remarkes upon the worke in the light of Newe Lerning." The print is neat, typeset in archaic English. A printer's mark says "Trevisa et fils. 1496," but the binding appears to be much more recent. Periodically plates (presumably bearing illustrations) appear to have been carefully cut from the book. Pencil annotations in modern English appear frequently in the first third of the work (usually glossing the more archaic language), but decrease in frequency afterwards.

[[Curtis Blakely]] read this book. It contains instructions for a ritual to bless a weapon with great power. The weapon must be made of wood or other natural materials; no worked metals etc. The ritual also involves the sacrifice of a bull-sized animal. [[Curtis Blakely]] felt that, if he were able to practice with the spell more, he could better learn to manipulate the magical energies to work on other materials and maybe require less blood.

People of the Monolith

White leather, 61/4" x 101/2", 104 pages, title on cover page. This slim volume looks to have been hand-crafted with an eye towards quality bordering on opulence. The pages and leather cover are excellently hand-stitched and the paper used is top quality. The pages themselves were printed as individual lithographic plates, that is to say etched on plates rather than with a regular moveable-type press. Every page has elaborate geometrical designs along the boarder; there is no artwork as such, save for grotesques incorporated into the into the first letter of each poem.

The most striking feature of the book is the unusual medallion on the front cover. It appears to be a very thin slice of some sort of polished translucent rock, placed over a thin sliver backing, creating a weird mirror-like effect in rich gray and white tones.

The front page bears, in a bold hand, a dedication "To Mister [[Roger Carlyle]]. I hope you find these words to be as inspiring as yours were to me at our last meeting. My regards to [[Anastasia]] - [[Tyler]]." There is no publisher or date of publication given.

Liquids (tea and blood) bead up and roll of the pages without leaving a mark.

White leather over wood, crown quarto, 7 1/2" x 5", unnumbered but abut 160 pages; a holographic (i.e., handwritten by the author) account by one [[Montgomery Crompton]] bearing the title "Life as a God" within a poorly rendered frontispiece of faux-Egyptian styling. The text is sloppy and erratic in brown, and sometimes fading, black ink. The book was amateurishly bound and the spine is separating in places.

The man standing before me was of swarthy complexion, but with a haughty bearing befitting an Emperor. He reached out a hand to touch my cheek, my wound shrieking in agony until he brushed it, washing away my pains. He spoke to me, in low tones, with a voice like a mother to an infant babe. He spoke to me of his grand design which would unseat the rule of Man for the rule of the true Gods, and how I might serve him. I knew in my truest heart that this was the purpose I had so long sought, that in His service, I would be made whole and pure and that those who had wronged me so greatly would be brought low. :A devoted member of the [[Brotherhood of the Black Pharaoh]]. In the book, he talks about his life before [[Egypt]]. Youngest son of a minor noble, Lancashier family. Drinking and gambling were his main past times. His family purchased an army commission for him to set him straight, resulting in him fighting for the British Empire. Took a french calvery sabre in the head, spending several weeks near death in a field hospital. This is when he had his first vision of the [[Black Pharaoh]]. He was told by the Black Pharaoh that it was the only true god and all others were a reflection of his glory. After recovering, he went to Cairo, indulging in copious amounts of opium trying to reconnect with the god. Found British and European expats that inducted him into the Brotherhood of the Black Pharaoh, which then let him participate in lots of orgies and sacrifice rituals. Rituals were held on a monthly basis with all sorts of horrible beasts arriving as part of it: Sulfurous bat horses, winged serpents, and more. He notes that the symbol of the Black Pharaoh is an [[inverted ankh]]. Crompton acknowledges that he and several brothers returned to England in 1805. "The night air knows best those rights and praises that were voiced by our lips and the ever waxing crimson flow knows our offerings, but no cunning art will compel me to betray my brothers still free to reap harvest of Britain's unclear fields."

A parchment bundle, 10" by 15"; 179 pages. The pages are obviously old, and have suffered from both the elements and the negligence of past owners. The most obvious damage to the work is that the back edge of each sheet is ragged. The work is handwritten and copiously illuminated with grotesque faces, obscene marginalia, and a recurring curious sigil resembling a triskelion. While it is obvious that Roman characters are used, the condition and age of the manuscript makes the language difficult to determine.

This is a recent translation of the [[Book of Eibon]], originally written by [[Caius Philippus Faber]] in the late 9th or early 10th century in medieval Latin. [[Gaspard du Nord]] created this French language translation in 13th century. The book mentions unfathomable, [[Eibon]], the Inscrutable. Land above the North Wind. [[Nodens]] mentioned. Contains Eibon's Wheel of Mist spell. Book is a commentary on Eibon's other writings. Author is boastful of his studies under the wizard [[Nethare]]. [[Sathojue]]' is a furry toad-like diety worshiped by Eibon and du Nord. Deity described as a patron of sorcerers. Book ends with a battle against [[Nethare]]. Yellow eyes mentioned are related to the thousand-faced god, lord of night, black man, aka <something>.

[[Alister Trimble]] learned the [[Eibon]]'s Wheel of Mist spell from this book. By placing a small bronze disk etched with a three legged swastika on the ground, the spell causes a whirling cylinder of mist to rise and hide the caster from certain mythos creatures. The cylinder cannot move, and it's height is determined by the caster and how much magic they pour into the spell. The wheel takes a few minutes to form and lasts for up to half an hour.

Africa's Dark Sects

It is made of green cloth over paperboard about 6" by 8 1/4"; 328 pages, with the title: "Africa's Dark Sects" stamped on the spine. Despite the date of publication being listed as 1921, the book is in very poor condition with a broken spine, cracked back cover, multiple dog-eared pages, and notes in the margin. The author is given as [[Nigel Blackwell]] and there is no publisher listed. The bookplate on the inside cover indicates it belongs to Harvard University's Widener Library

Beyond the reach of the great Abrahamic faiths, Africa retains the primal truths of human society and religion; society is as raw and unformed as the landscape. The Gods are known by their old names and not prettied up by hymns and incense. It is here in this great continent of the Id that Man may truly know himself. That Man, as a whole, is so brutal and untamed at his heart, only shocks the unlettered or those blinded by the false trapping of the prison we have built for ourselves in our so-called civilization.

The cult, named in whispers by the natives ‘The Bloody Tongue,’ is supposedly based far in the interior, but has followers in Mombassa, Nairobi, and even Muslim Zanzibar. Their idols are human shaped though surmounted with a long red trunk instead of a head, and it is rumoured that more than one missionary has discovered that when the whites leave, the natives swap a head topped by a crown of thorns for one with a bloody ‘tongue’.

The sorcerer would then rend flesh from his own body, usually the arm, and spit the bloody offering into the mouth of the body supposed to be raised. A great chanting would be then undertaken by both sorcerer and his audience. The words are not in the native Yoruban. I have attempted to capture them phonetically: “Hu ning lui mugluwal naf wugah nagal atzu tuti yok sog tok foo takun. Atzu tuti fu takun! Hu ning lui. (Compare viz. Waite and Zimmerman)”

Chapter 8 - The [[Bloody Tongue]]
 
Our expedition traveled east, across the [[Rift Valley]] and into the mountainous highlands of central [[Kenya]]. There, [[Kamau]] said he would endeavor to take us to a region where a small cult worshipped a god known as the [[Bloody Tongue]]. The members of this cult were reviled by all the local tribes in the area. Legend held that the [[cult of the Bloody Tongue]] was able to conjure something villagers called the [[Black Wind]]. It was a literal wind but infused with evil spirits such that it brought plague, famine, and death upon any in its path. The conjuration of the [[Black Wind]] was a rite celebrated by the members of the cult to honor the god of the [[Bloody Tongue]]. I asked [[Kamau]] about the god's name, assuming that it was named for some kind of bloodletting or sacrifice carried out by the celebrants, akin to the self mutilation we saw carried out in the mad rites of the [[Pain Dream]] sect in [[Congo]]. But [[Kamau]] was hesitant to speak more about how this cult came to be so known. Rather, he said this was something we should see for ourselves.
 
Stealth was paramount in attempting to witness a rite of the [[Bloody Tongue]], and in the end we determined that [[Kamau]] and I should go alone as we'd be less likely to draw the attention of the cultists, whose thirst for blood sacrifice is legendary in the region. We traveled two days into the highlands, the mountains growing larger and the trails becoming steeper as we worked our way up from the savannah into the verdure of the [[Kenya]]'s great mountainous peaks. The final miles were difficult travel as we needed to stay off the game paths to avoid making ourselves known to the cult members. We traversed the side of a low peak and eventually climbed into a large tree which provided a decent, but shielded, view of a clearing below. We covered ourselves with large branches and leaves and waited for nightfall. [[Kamau]] reiterated the need for silence if we were successful to bear witness to the cult's rites.
 
As darkness fell perhaps a hundred celebrants came to the clearing, many busying themselves in building a large bonfire and many more shepherding a group of clearly terrified captives. The captives were forced to stand with the arms and feet as far apart as possible, and in this posture the were bound to each other, wrist to wrist and ankle to ankle. From where I sat, the looked a bit like a fence - there were perhaps twenty of the bound in this fashion.
 
A priestess of sorts entered the scene. I was surprised to see that she appeared to be young and had strikingly attractive features. Still, it was clear that the other members of the cult feared her and gave her great deference. To one side of the bonfire sat a group of four drummers, three with large djembe drums and one with a smaller, higher pitched drum. When the victims were fully prepared, the priestess gave a nod to the drummers who began beating in a frenzied pitch, sounding out a rhythm the likes of which I had never before heard.
 
As the priestess whirled around the fire-lit circle, chanting dim words from an ancient spell, the cult executioners busied themselves with their screaming sacrifices. As the blood flowed, a chill wind sprang up, and I felt a flash of fear: the wind had become visible, a black vapour against the gibbous, leering Moon, and slowly my terror grew as I comprehended the monstrous thing taking form. The corrosive stench of it hinted at vileness beyond evil. When I saw the great red appendage which alone constituted the face of the thing, my courage died, and I fled unseeing into the night.
 
It was indeed fortunate that the following morning I was found by the ever-capable [[Kamau]], for had the cult members found me I have no doubt I'd have been among their next victims, being white or not. As we returned to the lowland to meet the others, [[Kamau]] told me that the priests and priestess of the [[Bloody Tongue]] practice a form of magic which allows them to bring the dead back to life again. The practice seemed in keeping with the Voodoun...

One of the only known copies was at Harvard University's Library. It disappeared one afternoon leaving behind only the smell of rotting meat.

We discovered the tome in the [[Juju House]] after [[Silas N'Kwané|Silas's]] Death.

Describes Africa as a place where Man can be his brutal and untamed Id and see beyond the false trappings of civilization. No title or author is given on the cover but a frontispiece identifies it as Ye Booke of Comunicacions with ye Angel Dzyon. The manuscript contains text in archaic English and an unknown set of symbols as well as marginal notes in what appears to be Greek.
