[[Charles St. Dennis|Charles]] won't forsake the life of his cousin by treading down this path. [[Omar al-Shakti]] tells [[Charles St. Dennis|Charles]] that [[Carl Stanford]] retained [[Mary Elise St. Dennis|Elise's]] spirit, preventing her from moving on to the promised afterlife. [[Charles St. Dennis|Charles]] wants to hear none of it though. Attempts to engage [[Alister Trimble]] don't get far, and he doesn't seem to remember anything about his days among the living. The group tires of being toyed with and leaves, going back to the car.

We're taken to the [[Shepheard's Hotel]], where we unload our trunk and watch [[Alister Trimble]] drive off with [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor's]] car. There at the bar we meet [[Gunter von Schreiber]] who says he knows his way around [[Cairo]]. We agree to meet the next day to head to the local newspaper office.

He remembers [[Jackson Elias]], but has no real information, though he seems to be holding something back. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] pushes him to give us more information<ref name="persuade" />, but he diverts the conversation with discussions of the history of the newspaper. [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor]] and [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] both pick up on him deflecting<ref name="psychology" />. [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor]] tries to press on information about [[Jackson Elias|Jackson]] and who else might've tried following up on him, but he doesn't seem to remember anything additional. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] mentions [[Omar al-Shakti]] to judge his reaction<ref name="psychology" />, and [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] gets the sense that [[Nigel Wassif|Nigel]] is interested in the connections we're making and seeing where they go, but he doesn't have a strong reaction to the name drop itself. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] lays on the charm<ref name="charm" /> and makes a final attempt to get him to open up, but he seems to just get uncomfortable. He tells us that there's nothing more he can think of, but invites us to come back and talk to him as we discover more. [[Nigel Wassif|Wassif]] is noted as the reporter of record. There is also a note that [[Hypatia Masters|Ms. Masters]] took ill and ended the festivities after the arrival. He tells us that's the big dig that's going on right now in the outskirts of [[Cairo]] and near the [[Bent Pyramid]]. It seems like they're close to some major discovery. There have been stories of disappearances of staff or people associated with it, but that's common. He doesn't seem very impressed by [[Henry Clive|Clive]], and they've gone so far as to employ a medium. He believes her name is [[Agatha Broadmour|Agatha]] something... He says it's not [[Anastasia]] when [[Charles St. Dennis|Charles]] references her. [[Nigel Wassif|Nigel]] does mention that there was a robbery of the [[Clive Expedition]] - a mummy was stolen, and the information was made public within the last few weeks. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] lets him know we're staying at the [[Shepheard's Hotel]] and he could contact us there. We take a copy of the latest issue of the [[Cairo Bulletin]] and see ourselves out.

In the afternoon, we go to the [[Egyptian Museum]]. We meet with [[Alli Kafour|Dr. Alli Kafour]]. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] notices a tattoo on his chest<ref name="spot" />, but isn't able to place it. [[Gunter von Schreiber|Gunter]] introduces us and asks about the [[Carlyle Expedition]]. [[Alli Kafour|Dr. Kafour]] says they uncovered some secret of the [[Black Pharaoh]] that led to their deaths in [[Kenya]]. [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor]] asks about the [[Black Pharaoh]]. He says at the end of the 3rd dynasty, a man named [[Nephren-ka]] came to [[Egypt]]. He was a powerful sorcerer. It was said he could bring madness or death to his enemies with the flick of a finger. According to legend, he was the [Black Pharaoh]] or in other legends he was a priest of the [[Black Pharaoh]]. His symbol was an [[inverted ankh]]. [[Nephren-ka]] and the [[Black Pharaoh]] ruled for several dynasties. [[Nephren-ka]] was said to possess a huge beast similar to the [[sphinx]] in appearance. His voice was said to be a [[Nyarlathotep|black wind]] that went through the lands destroying. The [[Black Pharaoh]] is still worshipped today by cults that are essentially inhuman. The cults may have something to do with the evil [[Queen Nitocris]]. She's rumored to be beautiful but horrible. The [[Clive Expedition]] recently opened a tomb and found a mummy that was rumored to be [[Queen Nitocris]], but it was stolen. He confirms that the [[Clive Expedition]] has been digging in [[Giza]]. They are specifically interested in pyramids built by [[Sneferu]]. He consulted for both expeditions. He remembers [[Jackson Elias]] as nervous and driven, maybe to the point of paranoia. He also asked about the [[Carlyle Expedition]]. He left [[Cairo]] abruptly and missed a follow-up appointment with [[Alli Kafour|Dr. Kafour]]. [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor]] shows him the [[Bloody Tongue]] symbol and he correctly identifies it. He believes the [[Bloody Tongue]] cult is related to the [[Black Pharaoh]], and that the cults have grown recently. [[Charles St. Dennis|Charles]] asks about cats, and he mentions [[Bast]] and acknowledges that there are a lot of cats these days. [[Dr. Kafour]] mentions [[Janwillem Van Heuvelen]], a man he's used for translations of hieroglyphics that's had a lot of issues with cats. [[Janwillem Van Heuvelen|Van Heuvelen]] definitely worked with the [[Clive Expedition]], though it seems that he had a falling out with them. We get his address. [[Alli Kafour|Dr. Alli Kafour]] mentions a legend about the [[Black Pharaoh]] that was said to arise fingers and toes, 20 years, after the [[Great Good One]]. The [[Great Good One]] was said to possibly be [[Jesus]] though he thinks it more likely to be [[Muhammad]]. The legend also mentions man-like, inhuman creatures under the sands that would kill. He also tells us that the [[sphinx]] was a ritual site for the [[Black Pharaoh]] and especially the [[Queen Nitocris]]. He gives us a tour, and points out what he claims is the original copy of the [[Necronomicon]]. He and [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] seem to reach a rough agreement that keeping that out of the hands of evil is of paramount importance. He assures us that it is extremely secured. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] pulls [[Alli Kafour|Dr. Kafour]] aside and confides that they are here to fight cults of the [[Black Pharaoh]]. He tenuously agrees that we're all on the same side. He agrees to help us make connections to people who've worked for the [[Clive Expedition]]. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] brings up the medium that the [[Clive Expedition]] hired, and he confirms that her name is [[Agatha Broadmour]]. He motions to his vehicle, a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, and we reluctantly get into the car. We're driven out the city to plantation mainly focused on cotton, away from the pull [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor]] feels. We're taken up to the house, a very nice Egyptian home. Servants greet and welcome us, offering tea that everyone but [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor]] declines. We're escorted upstairs. The decor is wealthy Egyptian with lots of antiques. The group tires of being toyed with and leaves, going back to the car.

The players meet in Jackson in 1920, joined together by a mutual friend (Jackson Elias), in an investigation of a death cult in Queens, NY. The Church of Our Lord, Granter of Secrets. The cult was started by a Catholic priest, Father Walter Corbitt. Together with Elias you gathered evidence to stop the cult and the kidnappings that plagued the surrounding neighborhood.

Jackson Elias is 35 in 1923, of medium height and build, and dark-complexioned. He has a feisty, friendly air about him and, as an orphan in Stratford, Connecticut, he learned to make his own way early in life. He has no living relatives, and no permanent address.
For his friends, months and sometimes years separate one meeting from the next. Still, he is well liked and respected wherever he goes. The world is better for having Jackson Elias in it.

His writings characterize and analyze death cults. His best-known book is Sons of Death, exposing modern-day Thuggees in India. He speaks several languages fluently and is constantly traveling. He is social, and enjoys an occasional drink. He smokes a pipe. Elias is tough, stable, and punctual, unafraid of brawls or officials. He is mostly self-educated. His well-researched works always seem to reflect first-hand experience. He is secretive and never discusses a project until he has a final draft in hand.

All of his books illustrate how cults manipulate the fears of their followers. A skeptic, Elias has never found proof of supernatural powers, magic, or dark gods. Insanity and feelings of inadequacy characterize death cultists, feelings for which they compensate by slaughtering innocents to make themselves feel powerful or chosen. Cults draw the weak-minded, though cult leaders are usually clever and manipulative. When fear of a cult stops, the cult vanishes.

We all go to [[Ho Fong Imports]] after breakfast for the meeting. It's a large brick building on the north bank of the [[Whang Poo River]]. A portion is built on wooden pilings of a pier, and a tile roof fends off the rain. Five sets of large doors along the side of the building give access to a high ceiling storage area. Two stories of low ceiling offices face the street. All windows are at least 7' off the ground and covered with iron grills that look especially sturdy. There are about 30 workers around. We are greeted by a woman (the one we talked to previously) who introduces herself as [[Sun Ch'unhua]]. [[Mary Elise St. Dennis|Elise]] introduces us and gets us in. We go through the main warehouse, a large storage area supported by wooden pillars. We see many types of typical goods about illuminated by dim overhead lights. We are led up to the second floor to [[Ho Fong|Ho Fong's]] office. It's a utilitarian space with simple furnishings. Filing cabinets seem very full. A stocky, rotund gentleman introduces himself as [[Ho Fong]]. [[Mary Elise St. Dennis|Elise]] negotiates some basic business practices and establishes why we're here<ref name="credit" />. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] explains why he and [[Dr. Victor Lester|Victor]] had been by previously<ref name="persuade" />. [[Ho Fong]] says they work with 3rd party ship owners and some owned by [[Ho Fong Imports]] directly. We go on a warehouse tour. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] notices a step creak loudly on the way down to the warehouse floor and thinks it is loose. We notice many boxes from London, but we don't see any terribly familiar boxes. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] notes that there is a sizable space near the stairs that doesn't seem to be accounted for by what they've seen on the tour that would be rather large - the size of the reception area. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] excuses himself to the bathroom while everyone else goes back to the office, trying to get to the squeaky stair. [[Ho Fong]] sends a receptionist to lead him back though, and he doesn't have time to check anything out. [[Mary Elise St. Dennis|Elise]] notices<ref name="spot" /> that [[Ho Fong]] has many Catholic items, and offers to show him her old bible over dinner. We're invited over to his house tonight. The secretary gives us his address - it's in the [[French Concession]]. We leave.

We go to the [[Seaman's Club]]. [[Mary Elise St. Dennis|Elise]]<ref name="geology" /> and [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]]<ref name="mechrepair" /> note that water seepage / erosion was not the cause of the damage. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] talks to some of the locals and is directed to [[Wang Yong]] who saw what happened. He swears that, even though he was drunk, he saw a walking fish, a human-sized horrifying walking fish creature: bloated stomach, bulging eyes, sharp teeth, human hands and feet but covered in scales. He says they came out of the ocean and undermined the structure. He's unsure how many of them there were, at least several, really strong and really horrifying. [[Jack Falcon|Jack]] questions the staff. They say one of the regulars is missing - an american... maybe John Smith - who was staying in the room where the wall shattered. The description of John Smith matches [[Jack Brady]].

We go back to the [[Astor House Hotel]] to freshen up, pick up the bible, and then head to [[Ho Fong|Ho Fong's]] house. His mansion is a compound with 13' high walls topped with spear points and broken glass worked into the tops (this isn't uncommon). A maid takes us into a luxurious sitting room where we're offered tea. This is fancy to [[Mary Elise St. Dennis|Elise]], so it's REALLY fancy. There's a guard behind a screen who smiles and bows when looked at, but he doesn't speak. [[Ho Fong]] comes and gets us and leads us to the dining room. Someone else is already there - we're introduced to his good friend and house guest [[Carl Stanford]]. [[Carl Stanford|Carl]] is cooking the meal this evening as a special treat and heads to the kitchen. [[Mary Elise St. Dennis|Elise]] shows [[Ho Fong]] the bible and they discuss it a bit, but she carefully avoids discussing where she got it<ref name="fasttalk" />. She then moves the conversation on to what rare books he has. [[Jack Falcon|Jack]] focuses on the surroundings. He notes the house is remarkably quiet, aside from our group and the noises of a single person cooking in the kitchen<ref name="listen" />. He also notes that there are guest quarters through a garden outside, and he knows that there are large vents that run underneath the house for heating and cooling<ref name="spot" />. [[Carl Stanford|Carl]] wheels out a cart with the meal - Beggar's Chicken - and he explains the history of the meal. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] remarks on the meal and asks how long he's been in [[Shanghai]]. [[Carl Stanford|Carl]] doesn't provide a specific answer but it sounds relatively recent. The others note that [[Carl Stanford|Carl's]] accent sounds Bostonian. [[Ho Fong]] asks about our origins, and reveals that [[Holy Trinity Church]] is his parish when [[Jack Falcon|Jack]] mentions being found there. We make a bit more small talk over the meal. [[Jack Falcon|Jack]] asks about smoking, but [[Ho Fong]] asks him not to smoke in the house. Then, [[Jack Falcon|Jack]] asks about the facilities, and [[Ho Fong]] gives him some directions. As dessert is brought out, [[Mary Elise St. Dennis|Elise]] suddenly starts drowning on seawater bubbling up from her lungs. [[Ho Fong]] says that she dies if we do anything. [[Carl Stanford]] stops using his power on her, and they lead us through the garden (where [[Mary Elise St. Dennis|Elise]], [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]], and [[Dr. Victor Lester|Victor]] spot corpses with liquefied eyes with plants growing out of them<ref name="spot" />) to a room with a shrine to Buddha. [[Jack Falcon|Jack]] shoves [[Ho Fong]] into the room and shuts the door<ref name="grapple" />. [[Carl Stanford]] freezes [[Jack Falcon|Jack]] in place with magic. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] punches [[Carl Stanford|Carl]] but doesn't think he even left a mark. [[Mary Elise St. Dennis|Elise]] stabs [[Carl Stanford|Carl]] with her coin sword, which cuts him, but he doesn't bleed. [[Dr. Victor Lester|Victor]] remembers [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] telling them that [[Carl Stanford]] is immortal<ref name="idea" />, an trying to think of a way to counter [[Carl Stanford|Carl's]] power, [[Dr. Victor Lester|Victor]] says "[[Nodens]], guide your spear!" and vanishes. [[Carl Stanford|Carl]] freezes [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] in place and is still holding [[Jack Falcon|Jack]], and [[Mary Elise St. Dennis|Elise]], seeing no way out of this predicament that doesn't leave her enemies power over her mind and body, cuts her throat saying, "My knowledge dies with me!" [[Ho Fong]] comes back and has a brief conversation with [[Carl Stanford|Carl]] in which they decide to move the two of us they've captured. Moving through the Buddha, we enter a shrine to [[The Bloated Woman]]. In a glass, multi-compartmentalized, coffin-like chamber, we see a woman - [[Choi Mei-ling]] - with rats in another compartment over her face. [[Carl Stanford|Carl]] and [[Ho Fong]] leave, and we are released from [[Carl Stanford|Carl's]] power. [[Jack Falcon|Jack]] manages to pick the lock<ref name="mechrepair" /> on the glass coffin to free [[Choi Mei-ling]]. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] attempts to comfort her while [[Jack Falcon|Jack]] pries the grate off the vent system. [[Jack Falcon|Jack]] checks out the tunnel while [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] looks through the room quickly. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] opens a teak cabinet carefully<ref name="mechrepair" />, which is good because he manages to avoid a needle trap. Inside is a copy of [[Necronomicon|an ancient text with a strange cover]] and 4 scrolls. He grabs them and then focuses on bandaging [[Choi Mei-ling|Choi Mei-ling's]] feet, noting that her feet are infected and she is suffering from blood poisoning which requires urgent medical attention<ref name="firstaid" />. We all sneak out through the vent system<ref name="sneak" />.

Outside the house, [[Choi Mei-ling]] says that she knows a safe place, and we let her lead us to an abandoned steel mill. Getting close, we recognize some members of [[New China]] [[Firm Action Faction]] who recognize her and usher us inside. We call the [[Astor House Hotel]] and tell [[Li Wen-cheng]] to grab everything he can from our rooms and head to a safe house location provided by the [[Firm Action Faction]]. [[Chu Min]], the English-speaking man who had us abducted before, finds us, tells us [[Choi Mei-ling]] has been handed to medical care, and that [[Jack Brady]] would like to see us.

[[Jack Brady|Brady]] cuts to the chase and gives us a detailed overview of the [[Carlyle Expedition]] events and how he came to be in [[Shanghai]]. [[Jack Brady|Brady]] believes [[Roger Carlyle]] is still in [[Hong Kong]] in the asylum he left him at. Asking about [[Anastasia]], [[Jack Brady|Brady]] says her real name was [[M'weru]] and she has power, real power. She's an African woman. She's from [[Kenya]]. Article from the [[Manchester Guardian]] about an 1853 fire at the [[Lancaster Royal Grammar School]]:
:“…the fire began in an attic area dedicated to the storage of excess equipment and other materials as of yet unused by the school in its new location. One peculiar item lost in the fire was an unfinished bronze bust of an Egyptian pharaoh by an Old Lancastrian, one Lt. M. Crompton. A veteran of the Egyptian campaign against Napoleon, he bequeathed the bust to the school before his death in 1811. The bust, bearing an [[Black Pharaoh|elaborate and complete headdress but lacking a finished face]], was a figure of schoolboy rumour, as it was considered good luck to rub the beard before examinations. Apparently, the heat of the fire was of such a degree that the bronze bust was fully melted. Of the two boys killed in the fire, it would appear that they started the conflagration, no doubt accidentally while exploring the apparently unlocked rooms. It is without a doubt that negligence on the part of the school staff led to this oversight.”

Took a french cavalry sabre in the head, spending several weeks near death in a field hospital. This is when he had his first vision of the [[Black Pharaoh]]. He was told by the [[Black Pharaoh]] that it was the only true god and all others were a reflection of his glory. After recovering, he went to [[Cairo]], indulging in copious amounts of opium trying to reconnect with the god. Found British and European expats that inducted him into the [[Brotherhood of the Black Pharaoh]], which then let him participate in lots of orgies and sacrifice rituals. Rituals were held on a monthly basis with all sorts of horrible beasts arriving as part of it: Sulfurous bat horses, winged serpents, and more. He notes that the symbol of the [[Black Pharaoh]] is an [[inverted ankh]]. Crompton acknowledges that he and several brothers returned to England in 1805. "The night air knows best those rights and praises that were voiced by our lips and the ever waxing crimson flow knows our offerings, but no cunning art will compel me to betray my brothers still free to reap harvest of Britain's unclear fields."

The investigators ([[Charles St. Dennis]], [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Dr. Victor Lester]], and [[Cillian Quinn|Father Quinn]]) arrive in [[Cairo]]. [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor]] feels an intense pull at his chest. Emerging from the alleyway we teleported into, we encounter [[Alister Trimble]], who introduces himself and says that [[Omar al-Shakti]] wants to meet us. We're all very skeptical, especially since [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor]] remembers this man dying in [[London]]. He motions to his vehicle, a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, and we reluctantly get into the car. We're driven out the city to plantation mainly focused on cotton, away from the pull [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor]] feels. We're taken up to the house, a very nice Egyptian home. Servants greet and welcome us, offering tea that everyone but [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor]] declines. We're escorted upstairs. The decor is wealthy Egyptian with lots of antiques. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] looks around and spots a marine chronometer among the items in the room along with 2 crossed scepters mounted behind the desk. [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor]] notices a photograph<ref name="spot" /> that includes a woman, [[Zahra al-Sayed]], from [[Empire Spices]] - the spice shop in London owned by [[Tewfik al-Sayed]]. [[Omar al-Shakti|al-Shakti]] attempts to dissuade us from our path. We roughly refuse in various ways. He offers us gifts and power if we cease our attempts to thwart his master. [[Cillian Quinn|Father Quinn]] dismisses it all as lies from the devil. [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor]] claims to already have everything that [[Omar al-Shakti|al-Shakti]] is offering. [[Charles St. Dennis|Charles]] won't forsake the life of his cousin by treading down this path. [[Omar al-Shakti]] tells [[Charles St. Dennis|Charles]] that [[Carl Stanford]] retained [[Mary Elise St. Dennis|Elise's]] spirit, preventing her from moving on to the promised afterlife. [[Charles St. Dennis|Charles]] wants to hear none of it though. Attempts to engage [[Alister Trimble]] don't get far, and he doesn't seem to remember anything about his days among the living. The group tires of being toyed with and leaves, going back to the car.

We're taken to the [[Shepherd's Hotel]], where we unload our trunk and watch [[Alister Trimble]] drive off with [[Dr. Victor Lester v2.0|Victor's]] car.

[[Anthony Chang]] returns to his day job at the local paper. [[Charles St. Dennis]] arrives to collect the personal property of [[Mary Elise St. Dennis]], and [[Li Wen-cheng]] helps to make contact with [[Chun Li]], [[Jack Falcon|Jack Falcon's]] next of kin. [[Lloyd Gribble]], who had met [[Curtis Blakely]] in [[London]] and taken an interest in escaping his failing career and trying his luck in the field, also arrived following threads that [[Curtis Blakely|Curtis]] had begun sharing with him. [[Cillian Quinn|Father Quinn]] and [[Li Wen-cheng]] share their knowledge of events with these newcomers, who are interested in following the threads that led to the tragic deaths of their family members. [[Cillian Quinn|Quinn]] secures the copy of the [[Necronomicon]] and hops the next train bound for [[Italy]] to secure the book with the [[Order of the Sword of St. Jerome]] and ensure it stays out of [[Carl Stanford|Carl Stanford's]] hands. He leaves the [[Seven Cryptical Books of Hsan]], seemingly against his better judgement, with [[Charles St. Dennis|Charles]], [[Lloyd Gribble|Lloyd]], and [[Chun Li]] in hopes that they will be able to use the powerful ritual to seal another site against the horrific evils he's witnessed. [[Li Wen-cheng]] departs with [[Cillian Quinn|Father Quinn]], done with all of this nonsense and hoping to return to a simpler life. [[Charles St. Dennis]] books passage for himself, [[Lloyd Gribble]], and [[Chun Li]] to follow the breadcrumbs to [[Darwin]], [[Australia]].
